Obsession With Chasing Their Tail
Does your dog obsessively chase his tail? Have you tried to distract him to no avail? Tail chasing is a common issue and generally simple to resolve.
This behavior usually starts small and builds up because humans generally laugh at their dogs which encourages them to continue. The first spins and near misses bring attention, giggles and a few pats on the head. As he expands the circular chase, the routine becomes funnier and he gets more attention.
But, for some dogs, the behavior continues to escalate. When he moves from clowning around to obsessing over his tail, the action is no longer funny and you begin to worry about your dog.
Why Do Dogs Chase Their Tail?
- Seeking Attention
- Boredom
- Energy to Burn
Tips To Stop Dogs From Chasing Their Tail
- Do not pay attention - positive (laughter, "Get it! Get your tail!") or negative ("Stop that!")
- Increase exercise
- Interactive toys like a Kong stuffed with peanut butter
Develop a game plan that provides your dog with increased exercise. You can also teach him a series of acceptable - and equally funny - tricks that he can perform instead of chasing his own tail.
