Is Your Dog A Ladies Man? A Leg Fan?
Humping, while embarrassing, is a natural action for dogs. If your dog is not neutered or spayed, it's very difficult to control. If they are then it generally exhibits as either a form of play or a sign of dominance.
Why Do Dogs Hump Legs or Furniture?
- Hormones, Natural Instinct

Tips To Stop Dogs From Humping
Teaching your dog to stop humping usually requires long-term obedience training in order to fully control the behavior because it is so instinctual. There are some quick things you can do as well.
- Neuter or Spay (if not done already)
- Teach, "Off!" by shaking your dog off your leg (or removing from a different object) and, once their paws hit the ground, say, "Off!" and give a treat. Do this a few dozen times and they will soon understand what "Off!" means. You can then say, "Off!" whenever he or she is about to hump someone or something.
- With a small squirt gun, shoot water at the dog when they are about to hump or already humping (do not shoot into eyes, ears or anywhere that will hurt your dog)
- Fill a tin can with 1/4 or 1/8 full of loose change and shake the can when your dog is about to or already humping someone or something
