Which Dog Training Solution is Right for You?

Learn about the different dog training solutions available to you to help you select the right one for you and your dog. You can also compare dog training solutions by price, schedule and recommendations.

Books

Dog training books are available in a wide assortment of topics. From puppy training to severe aggression, you can learn many things about dog care, health and training from a book. Usually entertaining and always informative, if you want to know everything there is to know about a particular subject, books are a great way to go.

DVDs

Though not as common, there are a few dog training DVDs available that cover topics such as Body Language, Pack Leadership and Behavior Assessment. Many of these DVDs are actually taped seminars and the production is not very professional, however, watching a DVD is a great way to learn visually how to interact with your dog for optimal training success.

e-Books

Dog training e-books are similar to printed books except they are generally packed with more tips and immediately available for download ("on demand"). Authors of e-books organize their information with less emphasis on storytelling or historical background, choosing to stress the concepts you need to know right now and what you need to do next.

Online Programs

Online training programs, when done well, combine most of the the training solutions into one package. These solutions are ideal for busy people who want to start right away and see immediate results. Step-by-step instructions are provided along with links to more background information (if you want it). Videos provide visual instruction and printed workbooks are often available. In addition, you can speak with a professional trainer or behaviorist directly if you need additional support. (Dog Academy also offers Personalized Programs to suit your needs perfectly.)

In-Home Dog Trainer

Professional dog trainers are available to come to your home (or location of your choice) to work with you and your dog one-on-one. Group class settings may be too overwhelming for dogs suffering anxiety or fear. In-home training is a safe way to start to ensure your dog's problems do not get worse. In-Home Trainers are a little more costly, however, you have their undivided attention and they can assess your situation and design a program perfect for your dog.

In-Home Behaviorist

For the extreme aggression, anxiety and fearful dogs, nothing beats an in-home behavior modification specialist. These professionals often have a Masters or PhD in animal behavior and have seen (and solved) it all. As with the cost of a psychologist versus the free advice of a bartender, behaviorists are not cheap but working with them can help you solve even the most obscure problems.

Obedience Classes

Many retailers and vet offices offer group obedience classes led by a professional dog trainer. These classes are held once a week for 6-12 weeks. Ideal for puppies and dogs who need basic manners and socialization opportunities, obedience training classes are a lot like kindergarten for your dog.

Board-N-Train

Similar to Boarding School for busy and wealthy, the most expensive solution for obedience training is also the easiest. Simply drop your dog off at a local boarding facility that offers training services and pick him up two weeks later - trained in all the basic commands! Convenience is key but if this solution is to work long-term, you must properly maintain the education you paid for. Whomever trains your dog is the person your dog learns to respect. If you delegate this responsibility, your dog may know the commands but choose to ignore them because he hasn't learned to listen to you.
