Become Familiar With Some Basic Dog Training Commands

All dog owners should know some basic dog training commands. A well trained dog can be a great addition to any family.

Here is a list of some basic dog training commands you may want to teach your dog.

Come
This is a very important basic dog training command that you will use frequently to recall your dog. This command is especially important to your dog's safety when he is off leash.

Sit
This is one of the easiest and well used commands. The "sit" command can be used to control your dog during times that he is very excitable such as when waiting for a meal, greeting people or interacting with other dogs.

Stay
This command can be hard for some dogs to learn as they are naturally curious. This will be a useful command when trying to keep your dog out of harm's way and can be used in conjunction with the "sit" and "down" commands.

Wait
This is an essential command for dogs that like rushing to doors or pulling on leashes. The wait command can help keep you dog in check and wait for your next command.

Down
This command is similar to the "sit" command but your dog will lie down on his belly. This is a more comfortable position if you will require your pet to remain waiting for you for more than a few minutes.

Stand
This command lets your dog know to stop moving and be still. You may want to use this command when you are bathing and grooming your dog or having him examined by a veterinarian.

No
This is one of the most basic dog training commands that should be taught from the beginning. "No" can be used to discourage undesirable behavior such as chewing, biting or jumping.

Off
This command particularly useful for dogs that like to jump on people or sit on furniture.

Leave It
The "leave it" command is often used to prevent bad habits such as chewing, or getting into trash or other unwanted items.

Drop It
This command is necessary to get your dog to drop whatever unwanted item is in their mouth. It is also useful when you start teaching your dog how to "Fetch."

Heel
When your dog is in the "heel" position, he will walk alongside you instead of lagging behind or running ahead. This is an extremely useful command to prevent your dog from pulling on the leash when going on walks.
